Broad Market Strength Offsets Tech Volatility as Investors Rotate into Defensive Sectors

Despite continued volatility across semiconductor and AI-related stocks, the broader market displayed impressive resilience as investors rotated into a wide range of sectors. While technology leadership remained uneven, strength beneath the surface helped support overall market participation and underscored the durability of the current rally.

Defensive areas of the market attracted significant buying interest. The health care sector advanced 1.3%, utilities gained 1.1%, and consumer staples rose 1.0% as investors sought stability amid fluctuations in high-growth technology names. J.M. Smucker emerged as the top-performing stock in the S&P 500, surging 10.4% after delivering earnings that exceeded expectations and issuing upbeat forward guidance.

Real estate was the standout performer, climbing 2.1% and leading all S&P 500 sectors. The group continued to build on its strong second-quarter momentum as investors favored lower-volatility, income-generating assets in an environment marked by elevated uncertainty surrounding growth stocks.

The broad-based nature of the advance was evident in market breadth measures. The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index gained 0.8%, significantly outperforming the market-cap-weighted S&P 500, which slipped 0.3%. The divergence highlights how weakness among a handful of large-cap technology stocks masked underlying strength across much of the market.

Smaller-cap stocks also participated in the advance. The Russell 2000 gained 0.4%, while the S&P MidCap 400 rose 0.9%, both outperforming the large-cap benchmark.

Overall, the session reinforced two important themes. First, semiconductor and AI-related stocks continue to experience elevated volatility, although investors remain eager to step in and buy pullbacks across many growth-oriented names. Second, market participation remains healthy beneath the surface, with cyclical, defensive, and income-oriented sectors all attracting capital. The notable outperformance of equal-weighted indices suggests that the broader market remains on solid footing even as leadership among the largest technology companies becomes increasingly erratic ahead of Friday’s highly anticipated SpaceX IPO.

Our FTinvest 11 model portfolio declined 0.52% to close at 992.63, extending its recent losing streak and remaining below the 1,000 level. The portfolio has now retreated approximately 8.0% from its all-time high of 1,078.93, reflecting continued pressure after the strong rally that carried it to record territory in May.

FTinvest 11 remains up approximately +6.94% year-to-date, preserving a meaningful gain despite the recent pullback. While short-term momentum remains negative, the portfolio continues to outperform its starting point for the year and remains positioned around a disciplined, value-driven investment philosophy designed to navigate both favorable and challenging market environments.
